MEDICAL SURVEILLANCE PROGRAMS FOR CONSTRUCTION WORKERS

A review of medical surveillance programs for construction workers was presented. The predominate work related conditions experienced by construction workers were musculoskeletal disorders, contact dermatitis, noise induced hearing loss, exposure to respiratory hazards, and lead exposure. The authors suggest that health maintenance and promotion information be included in a medical surveillance program and that the most effective prevention program to improve worker health is smoking cessation counseling and therapy. The authors conclude that the role of medical surveillance includes early detection of disease, workplace investigations of exposure, and health education of workers.
