How Big a Problem are EMFs in Europe?

A recent issue of Safe Health discussed whether or not electromagnetic fields (EMFs) present a health problem from a European perspective. The focus of the issue is whether or not scattered cases of cancer that have occurred among workers exposed to EMFs and persons who live near power lines represent a rare, but real risk of nonionizing EMFs. Epidemiologic studies investigating possible associations between EMF exposure and cancer have thus far yielded conflicting results. Once the results of population and biological studies that are currently underway are reported over the next few years, it will be up to policy makers and economists in the US and the European Union to assess the potential risks of exposure and decide what should be done. At present, most European Union countries have accepted the recommendations of the International Non-Ionizing Radiation Committee, which does not accept low-level effects. [BENER 10143]
