The authors investigated the effects of 50-Hertz EMFs on human blood pressure. Twenty six subjects were exposed to electric and magnetic fields produced by a 400-kilovolt transmission line and satellite 110-kilovolt lines. They spent one hour outside the field produced by the 400-kilovolt line, one hour in the field, and then another hour outside the field. Sporadic, but significant differences in systolic and diastolic blood pressure were observed, but this was attributed to walking by the participants. No overall exposure-related trend in diastolic or systolic blood pressure was seen. The authors concluded that exposure to electric and magnetic fields at strengths ranging up to 4.3 kilovolts/meter and 6.6 microTesla (66 mG) did not appear to affect diastolic or systolic blood pressure.
