A study was conducted to determine if exposure to magnetic fields suppressed night-time melatonin production in humans in a way which was similar to the suppression observed in rodents. Among other differences between humans and rodents, (1) rodents are nocturnally active and their night-time melatonin levels are more easily suppressed by light, (2) the geometry of the skull and location of the pineal causes stronger eddy currents in magnetic field-exposed rodents, and (3) humans show extreme individual variations in their melatonin patterns while inbred laboratory strains of rodents do not. Exposure to the magnetic fields used in this study did not suppress nocturnal secretion of melatonin in human volunteers, even in persons with preexisting low levels of melatonin exposed to light at night and to a 200-mG magnetic field.
