The authors evaluated possible interactions between digital mobile phones and implanted pacemakers in a group of 39 patients, mean age 69 years. No interference was detected in any test when the phones were in the standby or dialing modes; pacemaker interference was observed only when the phones were in the operating mode. Of the 672 tests in the operating mode, 26 reproducible interactions (3.9%) were induced in 7 of 39 patients (18%). The effects occurred only when the phones were placed in close proximity (less than 10 cm) to the pacemaker. The authors concluded that digital mobile phones held in close proximity to implanted pacemakers may cause intermittent pacemaker dysfunction with inappropriate ventricular pacing and potentially dangerous pacemaker inhibition. April 25, 1999 - Peter I recently started using a mobile phone (Nokia 5110) and have been concerned to discover that, even when in standby mode, the phone causes noticeable muscular aching when held in close proximity to my body, for example in a pocket. This aching sensation commences after 3-5 minutes and disappears almost as quickly after the phone is removed. When in use, I find that I start to notice a headache commencing after about 3 minutes into a call. As a result I have taken to using a personal hands-free set whenever possible. My question is - do I have a rare sensitivity to digital RF, or are there others out there who suffer in the same way. Incidentally it is interesting to note that Nokia's instruction manual for the phone makes no mention of possible health effects from using their product other than cautioning those with cardiac pacemakers.
