The author observed that extracranial application of picotesla (pT) magnetic fields first increased yawning and then increased motor and vocal tics in two patients with Tourette's syndrome (TS). A 6.5 year old boy with TS received transcranial electromagnetic stimulation with fields of 7.5 pT strength at a frequency of 4 Hertz on several occasions. Within 3-4 minutes of exposure, he began to exhibit frequent and prolonged yawning episodes which lasted for the 15-minute duration of exposure. Several minutes further into the exposure, he became hyperactive and restless and exhibited an increase in motor and vocal tics. Upon cessation of exposure, he relaxed, stopped yawning and stopped having tics. The behavior observed in the patient followed a biphasic pattern similar to the effects of the administration of apomorphine, which suggested to the author that EMF and apomorphine might work on dopamine receptors in the brain by similar mechanisms. The boy's 5-year old sister, also a TS patient, exhibited similar behavior when she received the same treatment, although her yawns came less frequently and she did not produce vocal tics.
