The author discussed the origins and consequences of electrophobia, defined by the author as an irrational fear of electricity. Today, most electrophobia is centered on the possible health effects of electromagnetic radiation from electricity delivery systems. The origins of electrophobia can be traced back to World War II when the use of radio and microwave communications and radar became widespread. In 1972, the IEEE Technical Activities Board established a Committee on Man and Radiation (COMAR), which was a formal body of scientists with collective expertise in the physical, engineering, biological, and medical aspects of nonionizing electromagnetic radiation. In the mid 1970s COMAR wrote effective rebuttals to articles in the public press that indicated microwave ovens were unsafe. Possible approaches for countering electrophobia advocated by the author include improving education by lobbying for more science and technology in the schools, improving the ability of scientists to communicate effectively with the public, and greater utilization of COMAR's expertise.
