While working in a teaching hospital in Baghdad between 1988 and 1989, the author observed a high female-to-male ratio among children born to men working in a local high-voltage power station and presumed to be exposed to high levels of electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Of the 62 children born to 18 married male workers, 54 (87%) were girls, while 8 (13%) were boys. The author suggested two EMF-related possibilities for the sex ratio imbalance seen in his survey. First, since EMF exposures have been linked with increases in lymphoma risk, and since increased female/male ratios have been observed in the offspring of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patients, there might be a single agent responsible for both sex ratio changes and carcinogenesis. Second, EMF exposure could interfere with calcium and cAMP more strongly in Y-bearing sperm than in X-bearing sperm, thereby impairing their motility. The authors hoped that larger studies would be able to confirm these observations. [BENER 14715]
