The authors evaluated the ability of humans to detect the presence of DC electric fields and ion currents. The subjects were exposed to DC electric fields at various strengths and in various air ion concentrations for about 1 hour inside a chamber designed to simulate the conditions present in the vicinity of high-voltage DC transmission lines. Approximately 67% of the subjects could detect the presence of the fields, and detection performance increased as field strength and ion current densities increased. All of the subjects reported that when they perceived the electric fields, they felt a cutaneous sensation, described as a tingling or itching. Most subjects rated the sensations as neutral or even pleasant. [BENER 14683]
