The authors described a case in which a 33-year old male patient wearing a cardiomyostimulator (model SP1005A, Medtronic, Inc., Minneapolis, MN) experienced reversal of the pacemaker to asynchronous mode. The patient showed no evidence of any functional impairment. The only recent significant event that the patient could recall that might have affected the pacemaker was his exposure to metal detection equipment at an airport security gate 3 months earlier. The authors concluded that moderate to severe EMI from the metal detector may have been responsible for reprogramming the patient's pacemaker, but they did not evaluate this supposition experimentally. The pacemaker was reprogrammed to its original settings and proper function was restored. [BENER 13801]

January 15, 1997 - S. Hess I am pacemaker patient who has been regularly going through airport detection equipment. Only recently was I told that this should not be done. Instead I was submitted to a "pat down search". I do wish there would be better communication to patients of this potential danger. Signs at the airport would be helpful, also doctors and manufacturers of these products should make the information available.
