The authors investigated whether magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could increase the release of mercury from dental amalgam. Polyurethane-based dental models with 20 amalgam-filled cavities were prepared and exposed to either a 1.5-T static magnetic field of an MRI unit for 24 hours or to a gradient echo sequence for 60 minutes. Release of mercury from the amalgam was assessed. In the static magnetic field experiment, the concentrations of mercury in a saline extract varied from 0.5-2.5 ng/ml. In the gradient echo sequence experiment, mercury release varied from 1.1-4.1 ng/ml. The mercury release after MRI did not constitute a significant increase in mercury dissolution from the amalgam relative to the control values in other experiments. The authors concluded that this in vitro study provided no evidence of an MRI-related increase in the release of mercury from dental amalgam. [BENER 13783]
