Low-strength magnetic field interaction with free-radicals has been proposed as a possible explanation for how environmental-strength magnetic fields might affect life processes. If the concentration of free-radicals in tissues is increased, this could adversely affect the risk of disease. The radical pair mechanism is compatible with the effects of resonant radiofrequency and microwave fields on chemical and biochemical systems observed in the presence of static magnetic fields.
