Power-Frequency EMFs Affect Melatonin Secretion.

Exposure of some rodent species to electric and/or magnetic fields decreases or time-shifts the nocturnal increase in melatonin. Inhibitory effects of melatonin on the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis suggest that an EMF-induced decrease in melatonin production might increase the risk of hormone-dependent malignancies like breast or prostate cancer. However, studies conducted on non-rodent mammals and humans have produced inconsistent results so that suppression of melatonin levels by EMFs and the role of reduced melatonin levels in favoring the development of cancer remains unsupported by clear experimental evidence.
