A "silent" malfunction was caused by electromagnetic interference (EMI) in an 8-yr old radiant heater used to regulate the body temperature of premature infants in a neonatal intensive care unit (ICU). The ICU had 2 sets of windows through which television and FM radio transmission towers located about 1.5 km away could be seen. The strongest electric fields measured occurred between 105 and 108 MHz and just exceeded the device's immunity (about 0.35 V/m) over this frequency range. The FM broadcast emissions were deemed responsible for the malfunction.

I would like more information on the electromagnetic interference in the ICU. I'm doing a school project and need to know how electromagnatism is interfering. Thank you.

In most common real situations, it was probably a mobile CB radio with an illegal amplifier attached that drove by and kept going. The radio station towers were just what was visible as a cause and not definate. Citizens band class C amplifiers jump into about every harmonic known at close proximity and are not around to get the blame. If the FCC did its job in this country, they would be 100% certain of the culprit, not making possible suggestions which are not duplicated at least ONCE in the laboratory.
