The author summarized the theory of how magnetic fields affect the recombination of free radical pairs and the relevance of radical pair recombination to effects induced in biological systems by magnetic fields. Magnetic field-induced changes in radical pair recombination are of interest because recent theoretical calculations have shown that such effects can be induced at field strengths as low as that of the geomagnetic field.
