A prospective study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between the use of electrically heated beds (electric blankets and heated water beds) during pregnancy and birth-weight and fetal growth retardation. The risk of intrauterine growth retardation was significantly increased for women who were unmarried, nonwhite, not a high school graduate, nulligravid, nulliparous, below average in weight and height, and who smoked during the third trimester of pregnancy, with odds ratios of 1.07 to 2.60. The authors concluded that maternal use of electrically heated beds during pregnancy does not increase the risk of intrauterine growth retardation. [BENER 12467]
