Alzheimer's disease is thought to be, at least in part, an autoimmune disorder initiated by chronic inflammatory processes. Because exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) has been reported to affect the immune system, the authors hypothesized that EMF exposure could be implicated in the neuronal degeneration associated with Alzheimer's disease. The authors therefore analyzed data from 3 independent Alzheimer's disease case series to evaluate possible associations between sporadic Alzheimer's disease and work in occupations with probable medium to high exposure to extremely low frequency (<300 Hz) EMFs. The authors concluded that there is an apparent association between occupational exposure to medium to high EMF levels and a 3-fold greater risk of sporadic Alzheimer's disease. The authors indicated that, as this is the first report of such an association, these findings need to be verified with larger case-control or historical prospective studies which include more accurate EMF exposure assessment and consideration of concomitant confounding exposures.
