The possibility that sperm damage produced by electric currents may result from the production of reactive oxygen species (free radicals) was investigated. Electroejaculation (EE), the electrical stimulation of the nerve plexus enveloping the prostate and seminal vesicles, is employed clinically to obtain sperm samples from patients with anejaculatory disorders. As a side effect of EE, and with direct treatment of normal human sperm with an electric current in vitro, there is a significant decrease in sperm viability and mobility. These studies indicate that in vitro and in vivo electrical stimulation generate reactive oxygen species and affect superoxide dismutase activity, which in part are responsible for decreased sperm motion and viability. The authors conclude that under in vitro or in vivo conditions, electric current treatment generates significant levels of free radicals which may be responsible for detrimental effects on sperm through damage to membranes or essential enzymes.
