The author reanalyzed a World War II-era study involving clinical effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emanating from radars and high-frequency radios on the blood of exposed workers, for evidence of the effect of time in the manifestation of hematological changes. The underlying purpose of the project was to determine if threshold-based standards for limiting EMF exposure (such as ANSI C95.1 - 1982), which do not consider the effects of prolonged exposure to EMFs, are adequate. The author concluded that results of the analysis suggest that duration of EMF exposures was correlated with increased white blood cell counts. This warrants further investigation, since the current de facto EMF standard recommended by the IEEE Standards Committee on Nonionizing Radiation does not consider duration of exposure when establishing a safe exposure level.
